Will be participating in the 4th Annual Breastfeeding Walk in Fresno California. It will take place on 8-1-09 at Fresno State University. It will take place from 8:00 – 10:00 am. The MC will be a local newscaster and there are about 150 people or more expected to participate. CVIH WIC will have a table promoting BF at WIC. Many participants are invited.

Activities:
Inyo/Mono WIC Program is collaborating with Toiyabe WIC Program to conduct our 3rd annual breastfeeding awareness walk at our local Tri-County Fairgrounds. We have also designed our own t-shirt for the event that every person participating will receive.

LA BioMedical Research Institute
Activities:
At LA BioMed WIC our outreach team is visiting 300+ medical provider offices in our service area with an information packet about the new first 30 days policy and the new State WIC educational materials. In addition, our ongoing Employee Appreciation Committee is providing each staff member with a WABA bookmark. Further, we are conducting training for all staff throughout the month on the first 30 days training, which is all about breastfeeding, communication, and support.
City of Long Beach
Activities:
City of Long Beach WIC Program is holding a variety of celebration activities in August, including:
Recognition of BF moms (an incentive will be provided).
Display and handouts in the entrance of the City of Long Beach Department of Public Health.
Display in the entrance of Miller Family Health Education Center.
Display including pictures of our exclusively breastfeeding mothers and their children at all of our WIC sites.
Marin County
Activities: 8/4/09
We are doing an all HHS campus campaign on breastfeeding awareness of emergency prepardness from www.waba.org on the week.
We are collaborating with public health programs at our health and wellness campus on breastfeeding awareness of emergency prepardness from http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/. We will have a centralized location at the Connection Center where ballons, buttons, sticky pads, handouts, trifolds and bf mothers printed in life size posters. We will also have the video played on our televisions and our local television station is coming in to interview our IBCLC,s about this event. Additionally a formal resolution sponsored by Supervisor Adams will be going to the Board of Supervisors on August 4th to declare August Breastfeeding month in the County of Marin.
Merced County
Activities: 8/5/09
We are having a BF Walk in Merced County on August 5th, 10-am - Noon. The walk ends at a park where we have a celebration. We are doing Mother-Baby Friendly Work Place awards and recognition of BF moms. District supervisor John Pedrozo and City Council Noah Lor will be present. We also have the city come and do children activities and we provide refreshments.

Monterey County
Activities: 8/13/09
Monterey County is planning a Breastfeeding Walk and festivities on August 13th from 11-1 at the Salinas WIC office; the actual walk is at noon. We have a Farmer’s Market that day and community agencies are participating with information booths. We also have radio stations broadcasting and helping with emcee duties and giving out prizes. Press releases have been sent out and we expect several media representatives. Our Health Officer and Deputy Health Officer will say a few words in introduction and encouragement, as will our Board Supervisor Jane Parker who has taken on breastfeeding as one of her priorities to improve the health of county residents. We have ordered tee shirts for walk participants and have activities planned for the kids. Nutrition Network will be passing out healthy food samples and we will have a booth promoting the new food package.

Native American Health Center – WIC
Activities: 8/3/09
Sponsoring a Seminar with the Alameda County Breastfeeding Coalition and other Alameda County WIC offices. The seminar: “Breastfeeding: A Tool to Help Address Health Disparities in Alameda County” will take place August 3, 2009 at the Every Child Counts Conference Center in San Leandro, CA. We invited Alameda HCP to participate. Also, at our WIC office we will be giving the WABA information on Common misconceptions affecting breastfeeding in emergencies; an excerpt from Breastfeeding - A Vital Emergency Response. Napa County
Activities:
- We put up a new bulletin board with pictures of breastfeeding moms and a banner with the BF Awareness message on it.
- We put up a banner in the Napa County Public Health waiting area with the BF Awareness message on it.
- We bought a Polaroid camera to take pictures of breastfeeding mothers during the month of August. We also printed frames to put the pictures in to give to the moms in English and Spanish. We will be giving each breastfeeding mom a red rose with the label.
- We redecorated our Breastfeeding room. We will be putting up the governor’s proclamation when we can get it off the website.
- We are also reminding the Public Health staff at their August meeting about BF Awareness week
North County Health Services
Activities:
Giving out certificates of achievement and a flower to each breastfeeding mother.
Orange County
Activities:
We are planning the following activities for August 2009:
- An all day Breastfeeding Conference in collaboration with Public Health Community Field Nursing Services and the Orange County Breastfeeding Coalition. We have 170 registrations
- Several lunch and learn presentation in 4 hospitals in OC.
- Display in the entrance of the Orange County Health Care Agency.
- Display in our building lunch room.

Sacramento County

Santa Barbara County
Activities: 8/13/09
Santa Barbara County WIC will be walking at Lunch
Santa Barbara WIC will be doing a proclamation for the County Board of Supervisors in August.
Santa Barbara County BF Coalition will have their “1st annual Doctor of the Year Award.”

Santa Clara County Public Health Department
Activities: 7/31-8/12
1) “August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Breastfeeding is environmentally friendly and free!” will appear on every County employee’s paycheck on July 31st.
2) We will have one hour of coverage on Childhood Matters Radio show this Sunday. One of our WIC IBCLCs will be on speaking on the tops of Breastfeeding and other Health , Inexpensive ways to feed babies. See below.
3) On August 12th, another one of our WIC IBCLCs will be speaking on Breastfeeding and Oral Health on a Spanish language Radio station. There will be a 15 minute segment where Dr. Edwin Chicchon, DDS will be interview her at 10:30 am. I am finalizing the details.
4) We are also doing breastfeeding activities at the WIC sites using coloring sheets and handing out materials.
5) On Friday, August 7th, we will be having an Open House at Valley Medical Center with the NICU, MICC, and Labor and Delivery staff with our task force.
6) Hospitals in the area will be using our Powered By Mama’s Milk and Hecho de Pecho posters.

Sunday, August 2, 2009--Breastfeeding and Other Healthy, Inexpensive Ways to Feed Babies. When it's possible, breastfeeding is a great way to keep your baby healthy, and it's much cheaper than formula. Making your own baby food is another way to provide low cost great nutrition. Join Nurse Rona and guests, Georgia Montgomery, Perinatal Health Educator as well as Founder and Program Director for The Parent Center, and Rosario Sandoval-Galvan, Public Health Nutrition Associate for the Santa Clara County Public Health Department Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC), with your questions and tips for feeding babies.
San Mateo
Activities: 8/5, 8/13, and 8/18
Physician Education inservice on August 5th. Will also be sharing an information booth with our First 5 San Mateo County at the County Fair on August 18th where we will do a display about Working and Breastfeeding. Anne Garrett will be attending the Sacramento BF Walk.
Shasta County
Activities:
- Display at the Redding Public Library.
- Display at the Administration Building.
- Display at the local Barnes and Noble bookstore of breastfeeding books.
- A display at the local mall comparing the cost of breastfeeding and formula feeding for 1 year.
- Local WIC mothers submitted their breastfeeding stories along with pictures of their children to display at the WIC sites.
Stanislaus County
Activities: 8/7/09
Stanislaus County will be having a “Celebration for Exclusively Breastfeeding moms.” Special items to be raffled ( in the past – strollers, car seats, etc – donated by health care plans)
- Food demos featuring healthy snacks (by Network staff)
- Other healthy snacks, water donated by Health care plans
- Inspiring story by WIC mom
- Media advisory submitted to local paper
Tuolumne County
Activities: 8/19/09
- Will have 2 different lobby displays in the local health department.
- Have media outreach with an article on the economic benefits of breastfeeding in the local paper.
- Have each exclusively breastfeeding mom receive a gift who comes into the WIC office in the month of August.
- Will team up with the local breastfeeding coalition and are doing outreach to health care practitioners and pharmacies during the first week of March.
- Will team up with the local breastfeeding coalition to deliver a basket full of goodies to the first exclusively breastfed baby in August at the local hospital.
- Will do an outreach with the local hospital nurses on August 19th to promote breastfeeding and information.
- Will not be joining the breastfeeding walk in Sacramento.
United Health Centers of San Joaquin Valley
Activities:
Will be doing the following Breastfeeding Activities:
- During each working day in August 2009, our WIC staff at each site will offer any Fully Breastfeeding, Mostly Breastfeeding or Some Breastfeeding WIC Moms (or, current Exclusive or Combo Breastfeeding WIC Moms) a form to fill-in the answer to the following: “List ALL the reasons you enjoy breastfeeding your baby” (in English/Spanish).”
- These will be judged according to the most number of reasons given. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes per WIC site (one prize per each winning WIC participant).
- During the month of August 2009, our WIC staff will create a poster to promote/support breastfeeding, for example: Infant Feeding in the First 30 days of life (a recent Regional Training Topic), Benefits of Breastfeeding, Breastfeeding Promotion and Support Policy, Breastfeeding and New WIC Food Package, etc. Each WIC site to receive $25.00 to purchase materials for creation of the poster.
- Posters will be posted in the lobby, at each of our sites.
- These will be judged at our September all-staff meeting. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes per site (one prize per each individual team member of the winning WIC site).
Ventura County
Activities: 8/4/09
August 4th: WIC will support the Breastfeeding Coalition of Ventura County:
- Annual Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace Awards will be presented at the Ventura County Board of Supervisors' meeting.
- The Coalition will receive a proclamation from the BOS that declares August 2009 Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
- A World Breastfeeding Week “no-host” celebration/picnic will follow. We have invited Moms, babies, kids, dads, supporters of breastfeeding.
- Photographers will record the event, and the local press is invited!
- A "Celebration of the Many Benefits of Breastfeeding" mini-walk created in collaboration with Ventura County La Leche League.
Follow the pathway from the Board Room to the picnic site and read signs about the infinite benefits breastfeeding confers to mothers, babies, their families, our communities, and our world.
Yolo
Activities: 8/13/09
Will have a walk locally on 8/13 – very casual, moms that are attending will get a baby t-shirt w/a breastfeeding message on it. Will also have a Board of Supervisor’s proclamation at their August 4th meeting (World Breastfeeding Month & Breastfeeding Awareness Month).
